Network services will not be installed until a cabinet is on site to terminate the network cables and install the network equipment. Trailers 3 - 7 I am not aware of the status of the network cabling by the contractor at the time I am writing this. As of last week, the cabling was being pulled to some trailers and there was discussion about a shortage of materials. I was assured that the shortage of materials (specifically network cabling) would be resolved shortly but I have yet to be notified of the cabling status. The wiring closet is still in general construction with Fire Alarm installers working in there on a regular basis. The room is being used as storage for various building trades and network equipment will not be installed in that trailer until the room is made secure (cage installed), no further construction is performed in that room and all items which are not network related is removed. Trailers 9 - 17 It is my understanding that the MDF is _almost_ ready for occupation by Caltech. In order for us to accept this location for our use, we must have a guarantee that no more construction will be performed in this building, that the AC works as advertised, that electrical works as advertised (during my last visit to that trailer on Friday of last week there was no power, no AC and construction still being done) and that the location is secure. Trailer 8 This location has a problem due to its pull distance to the MDF. The conduits run from the MDF to Trailer 8 run the perimeter of the facility resulting in cable pulls which are not in spec. To correct this, the contractor will need to remove this cabling and use fiber optic cable between the MDF and a cabinet to be installed in Trailer 8 in the computer lab. Details for this additional scope of work can be found at We have not heard how this will be addressed. Trailers 18 - 20 These trailers also suffer the same problems as trailers 1, 2 and 9. It is our understanding that the outdoor enclosure for the network equipment arrived on site today and is damaged. I have yet to inspect the cabinet but was informed that with some work (I am not sure what this means since I have not viewed the cabinet), the damaged cabinet can be used. I will render my comments after I view the cabinet. The web pages explaining the network at South Park have not been completed and are not ready for release at this time. Patch cables for the students will be available for pick up when the network is up and running. There is a limit of one patch cable per student per pillow. We will work on cable delivery directly with Housing (I don't know if Housing wants the cables issued to the summer students or to the fall students, we have not discussed it). joe. ----- Joe Monaly Jr. California Institute of Technology Network Engineer Tech Dev and Deployment/NOC, I.T.S. jemonaly MS 214-81 626.395.2109
