Date: Wed, 06 Jul 2005 11:04:37 -0700 From: Kenneth Heafield To: Dabney Subject: Move Day Is Tomorrow, Frosh! Apparently move in day is Tomorrow. ITS says they are _far_ from a functioning network in the trailers. That is, none of the ports will be active. Some nameless its staff had this to say about the network we're going to setup: Hopefully there will setup a wireless router outside tacit house for us. There is a limit of 20 MAC addresses. We plan on putting some routers behind the access point. ITS is of the opinion that it sucks but they will only do things "right" and not provide anything temporary. Also they're very angry and frustrated. One might want to hook up network cables in Munth (Blacker offcampus--not recommended due to limited bandwidth), Tacit House, or the Center for Student Services. The latter two have fiber going to them. One should keep these hints in mind: limit of 8 MAC addresses (not IPs) per port and trailers are on separate ground making switches very unhappy although Avery is probably on the same ground. Read http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps3873/prod_installation_guide09186a00800dffee.html . Finally, ITS has fired comptrollers of other houses for breaking into network closets. In short don't tell or ask a current comptroller about it. Avery may be persuaded to vacuously place their non-existant wireless access points in windows on the east side. Finally, all the charter cable modems went down today and they don't know when service will be back. Get lots of sleep because move day is tomorrow, frosh!
